I would like to say “Welcome” to our new year of 2010-2011 Cancer Aid & Research Program. As the Department Chairperson, I am honored and proud to take on this challenging program. Cancer Will Change Your Life! Not only for the cancer victim, or survivor, but also for their family, friends and care-givers.
Millions of Americans alive today have a history of cancer. For them, cancer has become a chronic (on-going) health problem, like diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure). Just like everyone, people who have cancer must get regular checkups for the rest of their lives, even after treatment ends. But unlike other chronic health problems, if you have cancer you probably will not need to take medicine or eat special foods once they have finished treatment. If you have cancer, you may notice every ache, pain or sign or illness. Even little aches may make you worry. You may even think about dying. While it’s normal to think these thoughts. It’s also important to focus on living. Although some people do die of it, many with the disease are treated successfully. Other will live a long time before dying from it. So try to make the most of each day while living with cancer its treatment. We need to BELIEVE and HOPE in a cure for Cancer.
In the words of Sheryl Crow, a breast cancer-survivor and famous pop singer and musician: “My experience was about letting go. It was about really experiencing all that was happening at the deepest emotional level, for that is where the big life changes occur. That is where you meet yourself. Where you begin remembering who you are and who you were meant to be. I don’t believe you have to be diagnosed to come to these lessons, but sometimes the catastrophic moments in life force you to focus in on the immediate.”
Remember: CANCER IS NOT “CONTAGIOUS”. We have come a long way regarding diagnosing types of cancer and treatment plans and how far research has come to identify, treat and plan the prognosis of a cancer patient and/or survivor. Yet, there is still much needed researching needed to be done to find a CURE for CANCER. So if you know someone that is dealing with cancer, contact them, send them a card, let them know that your thinking of them, and that you are praying for their cure and well-being. If you know of a caregiver that is caring for a cancer patient, offer to relieve them for a few hours to spend some time to themselves, after all, it is very stressful for a caregiver as well.
Our Department President Beverly Beyer has chosen “The “Cardinal Rule” (Our Veterans) year, as her theme. Why don’t we make it a Cardinal Rule to have our annual checkups for the prevention of cancer. But we cannot be totally free until we have rid this world of this horrible disease of cancer. Today there are many fundraisers that can be held to raise money for research. Encourage donations to be given as a memorial to Cancer Aid & Research in lieu of flowers.
