Welcome to the 2010-2011 Veterans and Family Support Program. As we look forward to a successful year, Districts and Auxiliaries must work together as “The Cardinal Veterans Rule” this program.
The Veterans and Family Support Program includes:

                National Military Services
                                                                           National VFW Home for Children
                                                                           Buddy Poppy
                                                                           Continuing Education Scholarship

Please read carefully the Veterans and Family Support Program. Changes have been made and it may be hard to find where to report all the good that is being done. I will update the changes in my quarterly General Orders and at all opportunities.

To better understand how to participate and report here are some guidelines:

Under National Military Services, we directly help the veterans through farewell and welcome home activities working in conjunction with the VFW Posts. We directly help veterans by making donations to Ladies Auxiliary VFW National Headquarters and “earmarking” (in other words noting on the memo line) the donation is for National Military Services.
National Military Services distributes these funds among Military Assistance Program, Operation Uplink, or Unmet Needs; wherever the need is the greatest. How great is that? Takes the guess work out of it for us!

The VFW National Home for Children provides a beautiful facility for the children and families of the VFW and active military personnel.  The ILLINOIS DAY at the Home is set for Friday and Saturday October,1 & 2, 2010. It is an exciting and enjoyable day for those who attend. Auxiliaries should continue to support the Home with donations for the Health & Happiness (.10¢ per member), Christmas Cheer Fund, and Campbell’s Labels for Education Program, along with Life Memberships. Remember, to send your donation to the correct address: Checks should be earmarked "Health & Happiness/ Christmas Cheer Fund" and mailed to: Ladies Auxiliary, VFW National Headquarters, 406 W. 34th Street, 10th Floor, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.

Our Buddy Poppy program extends a time to tell the story of the Buddy Poppy and every year there are numerous competitions based on the Buddy Poppy. These are times that we must remember the sacrifices made and the contributions that go into the making of these poppies. Remember the meaning of each one and how to wear them proudly! Did you remember ‘All American Star Spangled Bonus Day’ to be held on    March 3, 2011? I encourage all Auxiliaries and Districts to look for ways to celebrate March 3 with poppy distributions. Don’t forget all of our other poppy distributions on Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Let us remember that Buddy Poppies are promoted throughout the year.

Now, to a subject that hits close to home for me is the Ladies Auxiliary Continuing Education Scholarships available to eligible members. The reason, you might ask is that our very own state of Illinois has a past Big Ten winner! She is from the 14th District and from Post 513! It does get awarded and it is a real scholarship. Please do what you can to apply for it. It only takes a few minutes to apply but you get a lifetime of learning out of it!
What do you have to do? Be an Auxiliary member who wants to pursue education with a college degree or career direction at a technical school. The spouse, daughter or son of a qualifying member (must have been a member for one year prior to application) are also eligible to apply. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older. Applications are available at www.ladiesauxvfw.org and must be received at National Headquarters by February 15, 2011. AWARDS: $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in each of the four Ladies Auxiliary VFW Conferences.

I look forward to assisting you with the Veterans and Family Support Program and Thank you in advance for your support of the. I look forward to presenting many awards and citations at our June 2011 Department Convention.
