As we begin our new year in Legislation, I am so humbled and proud to have been asked to serve as your new Department Legislative Chairman for this fiscal year 2017-2018 under the direction of our new Department President, Mary Spindler.  Her theme this year is:

                                                             “LEAVING OUR LEGACY”.

Mary has been my Legislative Mentor for the past five years! So much I have learned through the eyes, patience and guidance that Mary has always shown me.  I could not have achieved what I have given you without Mary’s guidance, direction and help. I can’t think of a better way to give back to someone who was/is ALWAYS there for me, guiding me, step by step, through the understanding of the Process and what was needed to accomplish my task. Mary will be a great leader for us all as her commitment to our Veterans, their Families and to her Department of Illinois Auxiliaries is endless!  Her energy level and genuine compassion to help all in her path will be a model for us all. I only hope I can be as good as Mary has been to Legislation, to our Veterans and their Families, and to our VFW Auxiliaries!

Keeping in pace with our Department President is a quote which says it all:

“The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone,

but the things you do for others remain as your LEGACY”.

I would like each one of our Legislative Team Members to direct your work this year in remembering:  WHAT YOU DO FOR OTHERS REMAINS AS YOUR LEGACY TO OUR VETERANS!

My work began in the field of Legislation, including our Military Legislation, more than 30 years ago. Beginning as a student-intern in the field of Counseling in 1973, working with our Vietnam Veterans coming home from Vietnam, opened my eyes to the casualties of war and the effects it had with relation to PTSD and their medical concerns at times. After becoming a Counselor, our Veterans allowed me to feel where they were hurting. They allowed me to work with them through the many stages in their journey. My work with our Veterans brought me to marry a very special Vietnam Veteran, my husband: Paul. Paul served two tours of duty in Vietnam in the U.S. Navy and we will be celebrating 41 years together this year. Between my husband and me, we have 21 immediate family members who have served or are serving in several branches of our military.

It will be important for all of us to be in contact with our Government Officials.  They need to be aware of our concerns regarding such legislation and to hold them accountable for honoring America’s promises to all our Veterans.  I can’t wait to hear from you each month with your creative ideas, your challenges and accomplishments as we work together as one team across Illinois.  We will make that difference! I thank you in advance for your dedication, endless efforts, hard work, genuine love for our Veterans in making a difference and Leaving a great Legacy for our Veterans.
